The Conjuring 1 & 2

“Upon moving into a dilapidated Rhode Island farm house in 1971 with their family, Carolyn and Roger Perron experience escalating nightmarish terror surrounding the property. In their discovery, the Warrens discover an entire area filled with satanic hauntings that are now targeting the Perron family in every direction. For the Warrens to defeat this spectral menace at its source, they must draw upon all their skills and spiritual strength.”

The way I look at these two movies, these two paranormal horror films are something that other directors couldn’t achieve in the 2010’s decade. Props to James wan because, The conjuring franchise is the one that you might be looking for, as it’s chock-full of horror, scary, ominous elements with real jumpscares moments that may sometimes make you crap your pants.

Kevin Wendell Crumb, a man with 23 distinct personalities, abducts and keeps three teenage girls in his basement for unknown reasons. While Kevin’s therapist explores the depths of his mysterious disorder, the girls must find ways to escape before a sinister 24th personality emerges.

Such a beautiful, emotive and important work to come out of a culture so focused on the notion of identity and all that it represents within the human psyche. Don’t judge a book by its cover; don’t be fooled by the fact that this film is titled Split, e.g. “split personality disorder”. – Eli Hayes

Not a single shitty decision/action made by the lead character. You’d love to see it. – Syaoran

Flanagan does such an exceptional job of using camera placement to build suspense that it can be easy to overlook how much painstaking work went into his and Kate Siegel’s screenplay, a one-sentence premise ratcheted up minute-by-minute with new, inventive, and horrific complications. – anna nomaly

The Ritual

A glimpse from The Ritual

Friends get together to plan a vacation after a long time. Their plan is to go on a hiking trip in Sweden (Northern Europe). When one of them is injured, they must cut through the forest to reach the lodge earlier. As a result of a raging rainstorm, they were forced to spend the night in a haunted, abandoned house. However, the trip that was supposed to bond them brings with it things they never expected.

As much as I admit to liking cheesy jump scares and sometimes dumb teenager based horror, David Bruckner’s The Ritual is exactly the kind of adult dread jam I was looking for: an unsettling, moody picture that’s beautifully shot, well acted, and drenched in a specific atmosphere that I love. – Ian West

1922

A glimpse from 1922

The James family moves to a farm in Nebraska in 1922 after Arlette inherits it from her father. After a while, Arlette decides to move to the city, since farming isn’t for her. However, Wilfred insists on staying, and will kill in order to accomplish this. As a result, a lot of unintended consequences result.

1922 is a slow, methodical look at guilt and the consequences of moral compromise. It’s a film that basks in its atmosphere, it’s also a film that’s solely focused on its characters rather than plot. – Ben Hibburd

Gerald Game

A glimpse from Gerald Game

In a remote retreat, a harmless game between a married couple becomes a harrowing struggle for survival, forcing wife Jessie to confront long-buried demons deep within her own mind.

“It’s a brilliantly written horror film that does not just rehash overcoming supernatural demons trope, but rather dares to explore a metaphorical story of how a woman overcomes her own inner demons. Certainly, one of the best Netflix movies you can stream on Netflix India.”

Perhaps the quintessential King adaptation, owning the author’s problematic worldview, inability to stick the landing, and guttural dialogue/character work. But it transforms the fetishistic potboiler into a yarn about confronting one’s historical abusers, and embracing their pain. Wonderful stuff Flanagan should be so, so proud of. – Jacob Knight

The group must escape the blind man’s home before becoming his latest victims when it turns out he is a more ruthless adversary than he seems.

It’s easily one of the best horror movies on Netflix India. Not saying it, for the sake of it. It’s genuinely exciting and frightening.

Don’t Breathe does exactly what it sets out to do and that’s to fucking terrify the audience, make you shit your pants, make you cry, and or make you crawl up into the fetal position. Chances are very high that you will experience at least one of those things if not more. – Evan

A film made the way in which cinema is meant to be seen: so that the azzhole sitting next to you, scarfing down popcorn like a rabid squirrel, actually feels like an azzhole, in addition to merely being one. – Eli Hayes

In 1905, Thomas Richardson is attempting to rescue his sister from a mysterious religious cult that has kidnapped her and demanded a ransom for her safe return on a remote island. It soon becomes apparent that the cult will regret the day it baited this man, as he digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built.

How is everyone not absolutely obsessed with this film? The self cannibalization of religion takes literal form in one of the most gruesome films of the year. – Brendan Michaels

His House

A glimpse from His House – Horror Movies On Netflix India

The harrowing tale of a war-torn South Sudanese refugee couple who have escaped from war-torn South Sudan is followed by their difficulties in adjusting to their new lives in an English community that harbors a dark secret.
