Yahya Abdul-Mateen II To Set To Play Wonder Man In The New MCU Disney+ Show

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will star as Wonder Man in the upcoming Disney+ series from the MCU.

According to HTR, actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, known for HBO’s Watchmen and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman movies, is in talks to play Marvel’s Wonder Man, the latest Disney+ show from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The show is being developed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton and writer/producer Andrew Guest, who has contributed to many comedies, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community. It will be written by Andrew, and Destin will executive produce and direct one or more episodes.

Historically, WonderMan has always been a white character, and Abdul-Mateen continues the practice Marvel has employed since the days of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Initially introduced in 1964 in Avengers No. 9, Wonder Man was a villain who appeared only briefly during the early Marvel Age. In the comic book, WonderMan/ Sam Williams is the son of a wealthy industrialist, and his company, Williams Innovations, is forced out of business because of competition from Stark Industries. Due to Simon’s desperation, Baron Zemo grants him abilities, but instructs him to sabotage and betray the Avengers as a result.

However, in the 1980s, he was reconceived as a hero (and Avenger). As the character developed, he really became himself. Simon Williams was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers and became a celebrity thanks to his day job as an actor and stuntman due to his turtleneck, red jacket, and sunglasses.

Also, Wonder Man developed strong ties to Vision and Scarlet Witch, implying they were akin to brothers through ionic energy and brainwaves. Wonder Man also developed feelings for Wanda after Vision was disassembled.

The actor Ben Kingsley, who first played Trevor Slattery in 2013’s “Iron Man 3” and then again in “Shang-Chi,” is expected to reprise his role in the show, which may indicate that William’s history as an actor and stunt performer is relevant to the show’s plot.

Currently, there is no release date for the series from Marvel Studios.
