DC News: Henry Cavill Is Done With Superman, Young Superman Movie, Affleck Directing DC Movie

Henry Cavill has confirmed on Instagram that he will not be returning as Superman anymore, following James Gunn’s announcement that the master plan for the new DC has been finalized.

Writing on his Instagram, he confirmed the news, “I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.”

Henry Cavill Will Not Return as Superman

The future for Henry Cavill as Superman was reportedly less assured before he confirmed his return. Cavill said that there were ideas for a Man of Steel sequel when he first said he would return for it. However, once Gunn and Safran were hired, those intentions changed.

Gunn took to Twitter to announce that he and DC Studios co-president Peter Safran have completed the new DC slate and would reveal further details in the new year. However, Gunn did reveal one film, a film about a young Superman’s time as a journalist. Thus, Cavill would not be returning to play Superman.

Gunn tweeted, “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about.” Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”

According to Gunn, he and Cavill chatted, and while they won’t be working together on a new Man of Steel, they “talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Further, Gunn has been working on the script for the upcoming Superman film for some time now, but he will not be directing it. And it’s not a story about origin.

When asked if Ben Affleck could direct, Gunn disclosed he spoke with Affleck to discuss the possibility of Affleck directing a DC picture. “Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project,” Gunn explains.

Gunn also shot down Variety’s report that Matt Reeves’ Batman universe would collide with the canonical DC universe.

This seems to validate recent concerns that the entire Snyderverse could be scrapped, as Wonder Woman 3 is also apparently not proceeding. That’s something that filmmaker Patty Jenkins has confirmed on her Twitter account.
