As recently as October, James Gunn and Safran were appointed to lead DC, bringing back Henry Cavill’s superhero, and there were also reports about Wonder Woman 3 going forward. However, according to a recent THR report, the duo decided to turn the tables, maybe cleaning up the universe or DC reboot.
In the coming week, Gunn and Safran will meet with David Zaslav, the Warner Bros. CEO who is currently running Warner Bros. Discovery and hired them last October to run the DC. They will present Zaslav with a plan that will specifically outline what they hope to achieve in the DC.
Wonder Women 3 Cancellation
According to THR, the production of Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 has been deemed dead and is not expected to move forward. Jenkins has recently submitted a screenplay, co-written with Geoff Johns, to the studios for consideration. However, James Gunn and Safran informed the filmmaker that the project as it stood would not work with the new plan.
Jenkins was originally approached by Warner Bros. Film Group Co-Chairpersons and CEOs – De Luca and Abdy, who expressed their disappointment with the treatment and their doubts about the franchise’s trajectory. They then asked Jenkins if she would think about pitching something else for the IP in a different direction.
According to one insider, Jenkins refused and let De Luca and Abdy “know that they were wrong, that they didn’t understand her, didn’t understand the character, didn’t understand character arcs and didn’t understand what Jenkins was trying to do.” Jenkins wrote De Luca an email that ended with a link to the Wikipedia definition of “character arc” in order to emphasize her argument.
Jenkins was informed that the studio would be open to her pitching a fresh Wonder Woman approach if she wanted to return. She stated that she was sticking to her vision and wouldn’t perform an alternative treatment if they didn’t want to use it, and that she would just move on to her next movie.
Nevertheless, Gal Gadot tweeted fans on Tuesday, thanking them for the opportunity to play the heroine and role model. Gadot said, “I can’t wait to share her next chapter with you.” Whether Gadot knew the project was canceled was unclear, at that moment.
Man of Steel 2 & Black Adam 2 Cancellation
Henry Cavill recently teased that he was set to reprise his role as Superman after appearing briefly in the post-credits scene of October’s “Black Adam” opposite Dwayne Johnson. However, Cavill and Johnson’s future with DC is now uncertain, as THR reports that DC Studios’ new plan may hinder any future sequel to “Man of Steel,” while the disappointment of “Black Adam” to meet box office expectations has hindered the release of a second installment of “Black Adam.”
Matt Reeves’ Batman Universe Remains
While there has been a lot of mayhem happening in DCEU, if there is anything that has yet to be touched by the Gunn-Safran vision, it is the Matt Reeves Batman universe, in which Robert Pattinson plays the nocturnal being – Batman. Reeves is currently working on a sequel to The Batman, and overseeing the launch of two Batman series based on the movie, including The Penguin.
Do you think a DC reboot is necessary? Or do you think things are fine as they are right now?
James Gunn’s Response:
Gunn responded to THR’s report on Thursday by tweeting, “some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.” Added to that, he said, “We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”
