Antoine Fuqua is set to direct Michael, an upcoming biopic drama about the complicated life of legendary singer Michael Jackson which will be produced by Lionsgate. Graham King, fresh off the triumph of his biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, will now turn his attention to the Michael Jackson biopic. John Logan, who has been nominated for three Academy Awards, will be penning the script. His previous works include The Aviator (co-written with King) and Gladiator.
For a long time, this was a dream project for both King and Logan, who previously collaborated on Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated film The Aviator, about Howard Hughes. According to Deadline, the film will make the most of Jackson’s musical achievements and recreate seminal career milestones, from his days as the child star of The Jackson 5 to his work as the largest musical performer in the world as an adult. However, it will also address head-on the paedophile allegations that plagued his latter years and ultimately led to his death at the age of 50 in 2009 due to a cardiac arrest brought on by a combination of sedatives.
“Michael will give audiences the never-before-told and in-depth portrayal of the complicated man who became the King of Pop,” the official description of Michael reads. “The film will explore all aspects of Michael’s life, including his most iconic performances that led him to become the greatest entertainer of all time.”
Fuqua has directed a wide range of films, including the latest Will Smith vehicle Emancipation as well as Infinite, The Magnificent Seven, Olympus Has Fallen, Shooter, and many more. Alongside Denzel Washington, he directed the first two Equalizer films, and the third instalment of the franchise is now under production, with a release date of September 1, 2023.
