During 1970, monkeypox was first identified in humans in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where smallpox had been eradicated in 1968. As of then, most cases have been reported from rural, rainforest regions in the Congo Basin. Since 1970, monkeypox cases have been reported in 11 African countries. In 2017, Nigeria experienced a large outbreak, with over 500 suspected cases and over 200 confirmed cases, resulting in about 3.5% of case fatalities.  In 2003, the United States experienced the first monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa, which resulted in over 70 cases. Other cases have been reported among travelers from Nigeria to Israel in September 2018, to the United Kingdom in December 2018, to Singapore in May 2019, and to the United States of America in July and November 2021. In May 2022, Monkeypox cases were found in several nonendemic countries.  Due to the recent spike in cases, researchers are working to better understand the virus, its sources, and patterns of transmission.
